Natalie & Tim’s Living Room, Dulwich Hill

Natalie and Tim were designing and building their dream home in Dulwich Hill. For this build, Natalie chose to focus on eliciting light and warmth into the space with large glass doors, skylights and a wooden batten ceiling. This was then paired with Blackbutt timber furnishings in the living room and kitchen to tie the space together.

The bespoke 2400x1000 dining table seamlessly blends in with the other inbuilt pieces, using the same Blackbutt Amourply and design language.

Natalie’s home utilises it’s large open livingroom space with complimentary wood accents. These help soften the overall feelings of the house and encourage it’s occupiers to relax and linger in the space.

The same Blackbutt Armourply is used again for the shelves and lower console, where it hides large drawers beneath. These were reinforced with steel due to the close proximity of the fireplace.

The Australian Blackbutt wood harnesses deep coffee tones, grounding the space, naturally complimenting the kitchen and flooring. When paired against white, the contrast of the rich and neutral works to the space’s advantage.

After the success of using the Armourply from Big River in Balmain for our previous client Anthony Green, Made to Matter was passed on to Natalie by Big River, the manufacturers of the plywood. She reached out to us to execute the cabinetry for the kitchen, dining and living room which included a bespoke Blackbutt dining table. As she is an Architect herself, she had a very clear vision for her dream home of the highest standards.

Like other projects of ours, we collaborated with Natalie in order to come to clear design outcomes that she would be satisfied with. This process is often where we can really engage with the space, coming up with new ideas that are ultimately suited best for the space. With projects like these we strive to use materials and processes that not only encourage longevity but repairability too.

Natalie’s joinery took a hollistic approach, where all the pieces work in conjunction to tie the spaces together. Our custom cabinety is applied in the kitchen where it covers the fridge and pantry, as well as the living room where we designed floating shelves that we custom built. As this was a new building we worked along side the construction team to ensure that her cabinetry would be finished in time for the final reveal.

The result is a space that truly feels special and excels at providing functionality and personality to Natalie’s home. This was done through a collaboration of us and the client to achieve the best design results that amplify the space.
